Investigation of Work-Related Factors Affecting Academics’ Life Satisfaction and Job Satisfaction

The aim of the study is to determine the effect of excessive workload, the use of smart phones for work, and the effect of work-family conflict on life satisfaction and job satisfaction of academics. The study sample constitutes 413 academic staff in higher education institutions in Turkey. The questionnaire technique was used to obtain data in the study. The data were analyzed with SPSS 25 statistics package program. Factor analysis, reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data. According to the results of the study, the support of colleagues increases academics’ life satisfaction, while work-family conflict decreases their life satisfaction. While work-family conflict reduces the satisfaction caused by the general structure of the business, the use of smart phones for business purposes, and colleague support increase the satisfaction obtained due to the general structure of the business. Work-family conflict decreases the satisfaction of the individual due to the roles and personal values in his work, while the support of his colleagues kullanıcıincreases the satisfaction in question. While the work-family conflict reduces the satisfaction obtained from the manager / employee relations in the workplace, the support of colleagues increases the satisfaction obtained from the manager / employee relations. While work-family conflict reduces the level of satisfaction due to the nature of the work, the use of smartphones for business purposes increases the satisfaction due to the nature of the work. This study was conducted on the academic staff working in various institutions of higher education in Turkey. The study is limited in that the sample only covers academic staff. Also, using the convenience sampling method is another limitation in terms of the results of the study.
